Hoofdstad van de Champagne-streek, anderhalf uur met de TGV vanaf Parijs. Hier ligt de wijngrond waar het overgrote deel van alle champagne ter wereld vandaan komt. Niet alleen wijn, ook een gotische kathedraal waar 25 Franse koningen werden gekroond.
Sinds 1211 staat hier deze kathedraal, sinds 1991 UNESCO. Kroningskerk van 25 Franse koningen, inclusief Karel VII met Jeanne d'Arc naast hem in 1429. Vrij toegankelijk. De Chagall-glas-in-loodramen achter het altaar zijn vanaf de jaren zestig en mooier dan je verwacht.
Buiten de bekende namen Mumm en Veuve Clicquot ligt een netwerk van kleinere familieproducenten in de dorpen rond Reims. De sfeer is huiselijker en de uitleg persoonlijker. Veel huizen sluiten 's middags af met een lokale Brie en een glas, ideaal voor een rustige halve dag.
Het bisschoppelijke paleis naast de kathedraal. Hier verbleven de koningen vóór hun kroning. Beeldhouwwerk uit de kathedraal, de kroningsmantel van Karel X, en tapijten uit de jaren 1500. Reken op anderhalf uur. Mooi om te combineren met de beklimming van de kathedraaltoren.

Travelled April 2026, 2 nights, girls' trip. Booked the Reims package as a four, champagne experience was included. Reims Cathedral really stuck with me — nice to think kings were crowned there. There and back by TGV from Gare de l'Est. Lift jolted when stopping. Doing it again next year.

Travelled March 2026, 3 nights, with family. Booked the Reims family package, the champagne experience for the two of us was included. For the kids (7 and 10) we had Place Drouet d'Erlon for food on the list. Family room with bunks really helped. Pillows a touch soft. We'll be back.

Impressive chalk cellars, tasting at the end. Then Reims Cathedral. Upstairs neighbour was an early riser. Recommended for a sorted city + champagne break.

Een kwartiertje rijden vanaf Reims. Twee uur wandelen door de glooiing van wijngaarden bij Verzenay, de "montagne de Reims". Eindig bij het Phare de Verzenay, een uitkijktoren in de vorm van een vuurtoren, ooit gebouwd door een wijnboer voor zijn vrouw.
Half uur rijden van Reims, het hart van de champagnestreek. De Avenue de Champagne is een straat vol grandeur, met de gevels van Mercier, Pol Roger en De Castellane achter elkaar. Loop er rustig doorheen, ga binnen voor een proeverij of pak een terrasje aan het einde.
Aan de Rue Camille Lenoir. De roze suikerkoekjes die je in champagne dipt om hun luchtigheid. Sinds 1756 op de markt, oudste biscuitkoekfabriek van Frankrijk. Mooi cadeau voor thuis. Hun productie-atelier kun je kort bezoeken, kort en interessant.
